Three riders on horseback pass through the broken buttes and gullies of the Badlands in western South Dakota, and the eroded terrain frames them against the sky. Edward S. Curtis made the picture around 1905 during his long effort to document Native peoples of North America, a project that eventually filled twenty volumes. The record identifies the men as Dakota, the name for the Sioux peoples of the Plains. Curtis often staged his subjects in traditional dress, so the scene reflects his composition as much as everyday life of the period.
