Afraid of Eagle, a Dakota man, sits for this portrait taken at the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition in Omaha in 1898, when the fairgrounds drew Native people from several nations to demonstrate traditional life for paying visitors. The photographer, Frank A. Rinehart of Omaha, registered the image for copyright and sold studio prints of exposition figures to visitors. Pictures like this one show the clothing and bearing of the sitter as the photographer and the fair chose to present them, so they document both the subject and the commercial setting in which he appeared.
