Girls in a dance class take up this 1908 stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so the scene appears three-dimensional. Underwood & Underwood, one of the largest publishers of stereo cards in the early 1900s, sold such views for home parlors and school use, and its catalogs often grouped scenes under educational headings like school classrooms. Around 1908, dancing and rhythmic movement were increasingly included in school physical training, reflecting broader interest in exercise and posture. The card is a useful record of how formal schooling and everyday activity were presented to the public at the time.
