Tuskegee Institute, the school Booker T. Washington founded in Alabama in 1881, is the setting here, and the picture shows a history lesson in session rather than a campus view. Frances Benjamin Johnston made a series of photographs at Tuskegee in 1902 that presented the school's academic work to outside audiences, many of them skeptical of what Black students could achieve. Classroom scenes like this one were meant to counter stereotypes, showing students engaged in ordinary schoolwork. Look at how the students are arranged and what they are attending to, since these details reflect how the school wanted its education to be seen.
