A military band stands before a reviewing stand in this stereograph, marking the 25th anniversary of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1906. Booker T. Washington had founded the school in 1881 to train African American students, and by this date it had grown into a major center of vocational and academic education. The band and drilled formations reflect the institute's military training, a visible part of campus life and public ceremony. Underwood & Underwood, the firm that issued the card, made such views to be seen through a stereoscope, which gives the crowd and the band a sense of depth.
