Made to mark the 25th anniversary of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1906, this stereograph shows a band performing on the school's lawn during the celebration. Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee in 1881 to train Black students, and its emphasis on practical skills and discipline made military drill and music common parts of campus life. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereo views to a wide public, so the scene also shows how a Black institution was presented to American audiences in the early twentieth century.
