The subject here is a harpist, and the title ties the picture to the Royal Austrian Band, a touring musical ensemble, rather than to a single place or stage. The harp sets this image apart from the many band portraits of the period, since the instrument was less common in such groups than brass and woodwinds. The record dates the print to about 1894 and credits J.J. Gibson of Chicago, whose studio registered photographs for copyright. Gibson's work reflects the commercial portrait trade of the 1890s, when performers' pictures were sold to fans and used in promotion. The date and attributions come from an old caption card, so they are worth checking against other sources.
