Here Louis Armstrong stands at the front of his band with a microphone for the NBC broadcast system placed in the foreground, a detail that points to the radio studio where big bands of the 1930s reached national audiences. Armstrong was by then one of the best-known jazz trumpeters in the country, and by 1937 he had already built a following through recordings and live shows in New York and beyond. The picture comes from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper photograph collection, which documented city life and entertainment through the decade, so it offers a snapshot of how jazz performance and radio were becoming intertwined.
