Women marching in procession during the 25th anniversary observance at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama give this stereograph its particular focus. The school, founded in 1881 under Booker T. Washington as a normal and industrial training institution for Black students, was marking a quarter century of growth when the photograph was made around 1906. Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for mass-produced stereo views, issued such cards to be seen through a stereoscope at home, so the procession reached viewers far from Alabama. The caption also lists military training and bands, which suggests the festivities drew on the school's drill and music programs.
