The title names these figures as pioneer women of Utah, and the engraving, credited to H.B. Hall's Sons, presents them as portraits rather than as a scene of travel. Beginning in 1846, Latter-day Saints left Nauvoo, Illinois, and crossed the plains toward the Salt Lake Valley, reaching it from 1847 onward, with many women walking alongside wagons and handcarts. The record's date range of 1830 to 1860 is an unverified catalog estimate, so the print is best read as a general portrait of that migration era.
