Women carrying peat from the bogs near Dooagh, a village on Achill Island off the west coast of County Mayo, show the daily labor behind a household's fuel. Locally called turf, peat was cut from the bog, dried in the open air, and carried home, and it remained a main source of heat for many rural Irish families into the twentieth century. The view is a stereograph, designed to be seen through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. It was issued under the name of William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who sold travel views to American audiences around 1903.
