The League of Women Voters, formed in 1920 out of the National American Woman Suffrage Association after the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified, set up its national headquarters at 532 17th Street NW in Washington, D.C. This 1927 photograph records that building as the organization worked to turn newly won voting rights into an informed electorate. The League was founded to educate women on how government operated and to encourage civic participation, and the Washington office became the base for its lobbying, publications and voter guides. Looking at the picture, the building's street-level setting and ordinary urban frontage offer a useful reminder that much of the suffrage movement's later work happened in modest offices like this one.
