Few portraits of a British general from the American war were published on the Continent, which makes this mezzotint of Sir William Howe unusual. The inscription credits the drawing to Corbutt and names J.M. Will of Augsburg as publisher, so the plate was issued in a German-speaking city, with a French line beneath the English title. Howe, a Knight of the Bath, commanded British forces in America from 1776, took New York and Philadelphia, and resigned his command in 1778, the year this print appeared. European audiences followed the war closely, and portraits of its commanders circulated widely.
