John Marshall, the fourth chief justice of the United States, served from 1801 until his death in 1835, and this engraving presents him as the public man who shaped the high court. Born in Virginia in 1755, he wrote the opinion in *Marbury v. Madison* (1803), which established judicial review, and his later rulings strengthened federal power. The caption card gives no date for the print, so its origin is uncertain, though engraved portraits like this one were commonly made from paintings and circulated widely.
