Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce leader, is shown here in his later years, well after the events that made him famous. In 1877 he led his people on a fighting retreat toward Canada, and his surrender in the Bears Paw Mountains of Montana produced the line most often quoted from him: "I will fight no more forever." He spent his last years on the Colville Reservation in Washington, where he died in 1904. The record's details about the photographer and the 1899 Spokane copyright entry come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so treat them as leads rather than settled facts.
