An amateur contest for children, with final eliminations on September 24, 1936, is the event this poster announces, and its subject headings point to pianos, so the competition likely featured young musicians. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced it in New York City. The WPA employed artists to make inexpensive silkscreen posters that could be printed in quantity and posted around the city to advertise concerts, exhibitions and community events. Its flat areas of color and bold lettering reflect that style, and a date stamp on the back shows it was still in circulation in December 1936.
