A 1951 color lithograph pairs the Russian inscription "To the great friend of children" with a salute to Joseph Stalin, and the English title was devised by Library staff. The wording reflects the Soviet habit of presenting the leader as a paternal protector of young people. Children saluting the leader was a staple of early 1950s propaganda, repeated in schools, youth groups and the press to tie the country's future to one man. Stalin died in 1953, so posters like this one now document how the regime shaped everyday ideas about loyalty and childhood.
