Set along the St. Lawrence River, this hand-colored lithograph shows a Native encampment on its banks, a subject the New York firm Currier & Ives returned to often. The firm, active from the 1830s into the early 1900s, sold affordable color prints to a broad American public, and its scenes of Native life usually presented camps as picturesque and remote, in a romantic, nostalgic light. The river had long served as a route for trade and travel, and its shores were home to many Indigenous nations well before European settlement. Viewers may want to look closely at the figures and setting with the gap between the print's mood and the communities' actual lives in mind.
