A caption card reading "Digger Indian Squaw" labels this stereograph with a term that was a demeaning name for Native people across California and the Great Basin, and it should be read today as evidence of that prejudice rather than as a reliable identification of the sitter. The Library holds one half of a stereographic pair from the series *Gems of California Scenery*, numbered 597 and published in 1866. Stereographs like this were sold in large numbers for home parlor viewing, so such images reached audiences far from the places they showed. The record does not name the sitter or the photographer, and its caption information is unverified.
