Few captions from the 1860s are as loaded as this one, which calls its subjects "Digger Indians." Settlers in California applied that term broadly to Native peoples who gathered seeds and roots, and it is now recognized as a derogatory label. The print is one half of a stereograph, a paired image meant to be seen through a stereoscope, issued in a California series as no. 598. Views like this were sold to tourists and armchair viewers in the years after the Gold Rush, when Native communities were losing land and population, and such scenes were often arranged for the camera. The record is unverified, so the women's names and the exact location are not known.
