Knight's Ferry, a crossing on the Stanislaus River in Stanislaus County, gives this view its setting, and the caption's use of the word "Digger" reflects the derogatory label settlers applied to Native Californians during the gold rush years. Published around 1866 as part of the *Gems of California Scenery* series, the image survives here as only one half of a stereographic pair, so the full three-dimensional effect is not available from this print alone. Stereographs like this were sold widely in the 1860s and offered viewers a glimpse of California's landscapes and its people for audiences far removed from the places shown. The record's caption information is unverified, so details about the camp's residents and the exact date should be read with caution.
