Joseph Montford Street, who lived from 1782 to 1840, is named here as Iowa's first Indian agent, a post that put him in charge of federal dealings with the Sauk, Meskwaki, and other Native nations in the region before Iowa became a state in 1846. This 1897 halftone was made decades after his death, so it likely reproduces an earlier portrait for a publication of the late nineteenth century. Halftone was the process that let newspapers and books of that era print photographs and portraits in quantity, so the image reflects how Iowa's frontier history was being remembered and retold.
