Built between 1840 and 1842 on a hill above downtown Raleigh, the North Carolina State Capitol is one of the finest surviving examples of Greek Revival public architecture in the South. Louis Orr, an American etcher active through the early and mid twentieth century, produced a long series of views of state capitols and historic buildings, prized for their precise line work and tonal control. This etching is dated June 26, 1944, in its catalog record, so it captures how the building appeared to a wartime-era viewer. Its subject headings point to the building's architectural elements, which reward close looking at its porticos and detailing.
