Edenton's Cupola House, named for the small rooftop cupola that rises above its hipped roof, is one of the most recognized survivals of the colonial port town that served as North Carolina's first capital. Louis Orr, an etcher known for his careful studies of historic American architecture, made this view around the late 1940s, when many older houses in the South were drawing renewed attention from preservationists. In the print, the house's weathered clapboards, symmetrical facade, and crowning cupola show the Georgian-era craftsmanship that made Edenton a favored subject for artists and historians.
