The Lightsey House stands in Fort Meade, a small town in central Florida's Polk County, and the photograph records the house itself rather than the people who lived in it. The caption card gives no date, so the picture cannot be placed precisely in time, but its composition suggests the vernacular frame construction common in Florida towns of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Fort Meade grew up around an army post and later around the phosphate mining that transformed much of the region, so a house of this kind offers a glimpse of ordinary domestic architecture in a community shaped by both military and industrial history.
