A stone staircase in the Hôtel Lallemand, a mansion in the central French city of Bourges, is the subject here, and the building itself is one of the notable late medieval townhouses in the region. Built in the early 1500s for a royal financial official, it blends the Gothic habits of the older Berry region with the new decorative vocabulary of the Renaissance that was spreading into France from Italy. The photograph comes from the Arthur Stanley Riggs Collection, which gathered images of French architecture in the early 1900s, when American students and architects often studied such older buildings. The record dates it only tentatively, so the exact year of the exposure remains uncertain.
