In this view, the bronze equestrian statue of Tsar Nicholas I stands in the square before St. Isaac's Cathedral, its gilded dome rising behind it. Auguste de Montferrand designed the cathedral, which was completed in 1858 after nearly four decades of construction. The statue, by Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg, was unveiled in 1859, and pairing an imperial monument with a great church reflects the close ties between faith and crown in imperial Russia. Published in Philadelphia around 1900, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope to give the scene a sense of depth.
