Palm trees line the plaza in this view, with the cathedral rising at the edge of the Plaza de Armas in Lima, Peru. The square has been the civic center of the city since Francisco Pizarro founded Lima in 1535, and the cathedral was rebuilt several times after earthquakes, its present form largely dating to the eighteenth century. The picture belongs to the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, tied to the work of the American travel writer Frank Carpenter in the early twentieth century.
