Chartres Cathedral is set apart by its pair of unlike spires: the older Romanesque north tower dates to the 12th century, while the lacier south spire was finished in the early 1500s. The cathedral was largely rebuilt after a fire in 1194, and its stained glass and carved portals drew travelers and scholars from across Europe. Albumen prints like this one, made from paper coated with egg white and silver salts, were the standard photographic process from the 1860s through the 1890s, and their rich tones suited the dense stonework of Gothic architecture.
