The subject headings note a street alongside the cathedral, so the view places the church within everyday city life rather than isolating it as a monument. Montevideo's Catedral Metropolitana stands on the Plaza Matriz in the old colonial center. Construction began under Spanish rule in the late 1700s and was completed in the early 1800s. When this print was made, between 1910 and 1920, Montevideo was a busy port city, and its historic churches and streets drew both residents and photographers. The record does not name the maker.
