The caption identifies this painting of the Madonna and Child as "The Lady of Kazan," a reference to the revered Russian Orthodox icon of the Mother of God, first found in Kazan in the late 1500s and widely copied in Russian churches. The setting is a Russian cathedral in Sitka, the former capital of Russian America, where Orthodox worship continued after the United States acquired Alaska in 1867. The picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection and documents the devotional art that shaped church interiors in Sitka around the turn of the twentieth century.
