St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Gothic Revival landmark on Fifth Avenue at 50th Street, is the subject of this photograph from about 1946. Architect James Renwick Jr. designed the church, whose construction began in 1858 and which was dedicated in 1879, and its twin spires have long been a fixture of midtown Manhattan. The print was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer whose name appears in the copyright record, and the cathedral had by then served for decades as the seat of the Archdiocese of New York.
