Crowds gather outside First Presbyterian Church in Dayton, Ohio, for the funeral of Wilbur Wright in June 1912. Wilbur, who built the first successful powered airplane with his brother Orville, died of typhoid fever in May at age 45, and his funeral drew mourners from across the city. The picture is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news pictures made in the 1910s, and it records a moment when a local farewell became national news. Notice how densely the street is packed, a sign of the public interest in the aviation pioneer's passing.
