The photograph shows the ruined church of Santo Domingo in Arequipa, with its walls broken open and its roof gone. It records the aftermath of the powerful earthquake of 1868, which damaged cities along Peru's southern coast and in the highlands. The print was made by Courret Hermanos, a photography studio in Lima, and it is part of an album titled *Recuerdos del Perú*. Its albumen surface holds fine detail in the stonework and the scattered rubble, which show how thoroughly the building gave way.
