This photomechanical print reproduces a watercolor by James E. Taylor, showing the entrance to a residence on the Haina Road, about half a mile west of the city limits of Santo Domingo. The date of about 1871 places it during the visit of a United States commission to the Dominican Republic that year, when Washington was weighing a proposal to annex the country. Taylor's views of the capital and its surroundings offer a record of the setting at that moment. The caption card lists churches, burial, forts, and geography as subjects, though those tracings are unverified and should be read as loose guides rather than a description of the scene.
