This albumen print shows Six Mile Canyon as seen from C Street in Virginia City, Nevada, and it survives as one half of a stereograph pair, the other half not held by the Library. Published around 1866 as number 717 in a series of California-style scenery views, it was sold to a public eager for images of the mining frontier. Virginia City had grown rapidly after the Comstock Lode silver discovery of 1859, and the surrounding canyons were crowded with mills, mine works, and the timber hauled in to shore up tunnels. The record's caption information has not been independently verified, so the exact details of the view are best read as contemporary labeling.
