Workers laying the Nicolson pavement on J Street, at its corner with Sixth Street in Sacramento, are the focus of this stereograph view. Nicolson pavement was a wood-block paving popular in American cities in the 1850s and 1860s, valued for a smoother, quieter surface than dirt or cobblestones. Sacramento, the state capital since 1854, was a busy river town where muddy streets were a constant problem, so the scene captures an effort to improve the city's streets. Only one half of the original stereo pair survives, and the 1866 date comes from an older caption, so the view is best read as a snapshot of civic street work in the 1860s.
