Inside a Division Street tenement, a necktie workshop operated in what should have been an ordinary apartment, with cutting and sewing crowded into rooms meant for living. Division Street, on Manhattan's Lower East Side, was one of the most densely built tenement districts of the 1880s, and home-based contract work like this was common there. Photographers documenting the city's poor around 1889, Jacob Riis among them, recorded such scenes to press for housing and labor reform. The caption details for this print come from old, unverified notes, so the exact date and specifics are worth checking against other sources.
