Sewing lessons were a standard part of the schoolgirl's day in late nineteenth-century Washington, and this print records one such class from the room labeled "3rd Division" on its caption card. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer, documented the city's schools in albums around 1899, and her pictures show classrooms much as they were arranged then. The cyanotype process, which yields a distinctive blue-and-white image, was inexpensive and widely used for documentary work of this kind. The scene shows how practical skills like needlework were taught alongside reading and arithmetic.
