Labeled as an arithmetic lesson in the Sixth Division, this cyanotype documents a classroom in the Washington, D.C., public schools around the close of the nineteenth century. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading photographer of her day, made the series of school views in which it appears, and the album groups her pictures by school division. The cyanotype process, which renders images in pale tones against a deep blue ground, was inexpensive and durable, and it gives the scene a cool, distinctive look. The record dates the picture to about 1899 with a question mark, so the exact year remains uncertain.
