Few pictures show the inside of a church turned into a barracks as plainly as this one, which records a dining hall and sleeping quarters for American soldiers at Malagon in the Philippine Islands. Churches were often commandeered for troops during the Philippine-American War, which began in 1899, when American forces needed shelter in towns across the archipelago. The card is a stereograph issued by the Keystone View Company, a firm that sold paired views for parlor viewers. Its 1919 date reflects the copyright and caption, while the record suggests the scene itself may be from around 1899, a detail not fully verified.
