Few towns in Michigan's Upper Peninsula were tied more closely to copper than Hancock, on the Keweenaw Peninsula, and this view of its high school reflects a community built around that trade. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns and landmarks across the country for sale in the early 1900s, made the picture, and its catalog number suggests it was one of many views in the series. The c1906 date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified, so read it as a snapshot of the period. Schools in mining towns like Hancock were often points of civic pride, in places where many families had come from Cornwall, Finland and other parts of Europe.
