Uniformed students from a high school in Damascus pose for this portrait, one of several student studies gathered in an album of Ottoman schools. The Constantinople studio of Sebah & Joaillier made many views of the empire, and this albumen print from between about 1880 and 1893 belongs to the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, assembled during a reign from 1876 to 1909 when state schooling expanded across the provinces. The picture shows how the government used photography to present its new institutions. Note the uniforms, which the subject headings single out as a notable feature of the period.
