Yanya, the Ottoman provincial town now called Ioannina in northwestern Greece, is the setting for this portrait of high school students in uniform. The print was made by the Constantinople studio of Sebah & Joaillier, a firm known for photographing the empire, and its caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French. Between 1888 and 1893, prints like this were gathered into albums of schools and student portraits, which now form part of the Abdul-Hamid II collection at the Library of Congress.
