Monastir, the provincial city known today as Bitola in North Macedonia, was one of the Ottoman Empire's significant regional centers, and this high school was part of its civic life in the late 1880s. The print comes from a numbered album of school portraits later held in the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, assembled during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, whose government expanded state education. The Istanbul studio of Sebah & Joaillier made the photograph between about 1888 and 1893. Its captions in Ottoman Turkish and French suggest the album was meant to present the empire's modern schools to both domestic and European audiences.
