Few pictures in the Abdul-Hamid II collection document schools in provincial towns, and this albumen print shows a high school in Manisa, a city in western Anatolia. It was made by the Constantinople studio of Sebah & Joaillier, a firm known for its many views of Ottoman sites, and it was captioned in both Ottoman Turkish and French for the album it was assembled into. The album's emphasis on schools and student portraits reflects the late nineteenth-century Ottoman effort to expand state education beyond the capital. The print's dating, between about 1888 and 1893, places it during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II.
