Captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French, this albumen print shows students from a high school in Dersaadet, the Ottoman name for Istanbul, and is number 24 in an album of student portraits. Abdullah Frères held the title of photographers to the Sultan, and their work for the court is preserved in the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress. The uniforms and orderly group arrangement reflect the state's push to modernize education in the late 1800s, when portraits like this documented imperial institutions.
