Uniformed students at a school for the blind in Istanbul gather for this group portrait, captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French as the work of Abdullah Frères, photographers to the Sultan. The Abdullah brothers were among the best-known studios in the Ottoman capital, and their court commissions were often assembled into albums. The print is numbered sixth in its album and dates to the reign of Abdul-Hamid II, a period when the state was expanding public education. The image is worth a closer look for its uniforms and the way it frames disability as a subject of schooling.
