The School of Arts for Girls (Kız Sanayi Mektebi) in Istanbul is the subject of this view, one of the few images in the Library of Congress's Abdul-Hamid II Collection that documents a vocational school for young women. The albumen print was made by Abdullah Frères, the studio that served as photographers to Sultan Abdul Hamid II, and its Ottoman Turkish and French caption marks it as number 17 in an album of schools. Such photographs were often assembled to present the sultan's educational reforms, and this one reflects the effort to give girls practical training in the empire's capital during the 1880s.
