Students at the Ravza-yi Terakki private school in Istanbul are gathered for this portrait, one of several student photographs in an album captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French. The studio, Abdullah Frères, held the title of photographers to the Sultan, and the print is an albumen, the standard process of the period. It belongs to the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, assembled during his reign from 1876 to 1909, and offers a record of schooling and dress in the late Ottoman capital. The uniforms and group arrangement are worth noticing as evidence of how modern private education was presented.
